Powerstar, the market-leading energy storage and voltage optimisation brand has been shortlisted for two 2017 Energy Awards.

The company’s VIRTUE EV energy storage solution has been shortlisted in the Innovation of the Year – Technology: Physical category and its online remote monitoring and management service for the VIRTUE energy storage solution has been shortlisted for the Smart Product of the Year.

VIRTUE EV is one of the world’s first integrated rapid/fast electric vehicle and energy storage systems. The technology is powered by a ‘local’ off-grid energy storage solution, allowing a site to charge electric vehicles without investing in costly upgrades to energy infrastructures and cabling.

The solution has been shortlisted for the award due to its ability to negate the significant load and demand placed on the grid by traditional EV chargers. Currently, many locations would struggle to charge more than two cars simultaneously, purely due to the amount of power required.

The judges were also impressed by using VIRTUE EV’s capability to charge vehicles off-grid. The clever solution drastically reduces demand spikes and supplies the highest possible charging rate by using stored energy from both renewable and non-renewable sources to manage any sudden power increase.

Further benefits of the solution include full Uninterruptable Power Supply (UPS) functionality, alongside the capability to charge the batteries during low-tariff grid periods.

The second Powerstar solution to be shortlisted is VIRTUE Demand Side RMM, a service that facilitates an intelligent approach to the Remote Monitoring and Management (RMM) of load control outputs for demand side programs.

A key feature in the service being shortlisted is its host of features that are tailored to suit individual client requirements. The solution offers the functionality and depth of detail needed through a secure login user-friendly dashboard that provides a complete monitoring and management service.

The RMM interprets incoming and outgoing energy data, enabling it to be used as an inspection and tracking tool. Clients can easily set up automatic weekly reports to effortlessly summarise savings in pounds and kWh’s.

In terms of remote management, its abilities include remotely disconnecting the system, a valuable tool during times of necessary full system shutdown.

Furthermore, it provides a number of diagnostics and trend analysis to generate insights into how to best utilise the system, as well as assisting to understand DSR events in order to improve future responsiveness and help steer future product development to meet the demands of the network.

The latest success comes following a string of award nominations and wins, including being shortlisted for the VIRTUE energy storage solution in the 2016 Energy Awards in the Innovation of the Year – Technology: Internet and Control category.

The winners of the Energy Awards 2017 will be announced on the 6th December, at an event held at the Hilton on Park Lane, London.

Dr. Alex Mardapittas, managing director for Powerstar, said: “The market for electric vehicles in the UK is increasing at a dramatic rate, with over 100,000 registered in the first quarter of 2017 up from 4,000 in the first quarter of 2012. This figure is set to grow as the Government plans to ban the sale of new diesel and petrol cars from 2040.

“However, in its current state, the National Grid will not be able to manage the additional capacity. It is crucial, therefore, to have an increasing number of new innovative technologies supporting the National Grid that can reduce the amount of power, whilst providing additional support when required.

“As a company, we are always evolving and developing new solutions to our clients’ energy problems and, to further support the transition into a low carbon economy, our growing range of services will further enhance our customers’ experience.”
