DIVING HEAD FIRST INTO ENERGY SAVINGS

The latest addition to a long and growing list of energy saving case studies in the leisure industry is for Jesmond Pool, a community managed leisure site operated by Jesmond Community Leisure in Newcastle upon Tyne, which has operated as a charity since its re-opening in 1992.

Jesmond PoolAs well as a swimming pool with various classes for all ages, the centre houses 2 gyms, a multi-purpose dance and activity room, a massage and therapy room, and a poolside sauna and steam room, and has played an active role in the surrounding community for the past 15 years.

As a charity-run centre, and due to its extended opening hours and wide range of activities, Jesmond Pool was looking for ways to reduce operational costs to allow capital to be freed up and reinvested into core business activities.

Additionally, Jesmond Community Leisure actively seeks improvements to its energy efficiency and sustainability, and had already taken energy efficiency measures, such as replacing its lighting with LEDs, updating its heating system, and installing solar panels, making voltage optimisation another positive step in furthering its energy efficiency efforts.

Jesmond Pool approached Powerstar due to our extensive work delivering significant savings within the leisure industry, in addition to our market leading reputation. The operations manager at Jesmond Pool clearly expressed that, as a customer focused business, it was imperative that the installation of any technology be completed with minimal disruption to the comfort and enjoyment of the facility’s customers.

After a thorough survey of Jesmond Pool’s voltage profile and electricity consumption, we found the incoming voltage to be extremely high, with the maximum voltage recorded at 261.8V, but fairly stable. We therefore recommended the installation of a bespoke 179kVA Powerstar LITE voltage optimisation solution to reduce the voltage by a fixed amount on a pre-defined tap range.
