SECOND SAVING VERIFICATION FROM VASSILIKO CEMENT WORKS, CYPRUS

Following a recent successful case study published in April 2018 for Vassiliko Cement Works Public Limited, the largest heavy industry company in Cyprus, we are pleased to release a second case study showcasing the results of another Powerstar installation for the company.

Vassiliko Cement Works has been operating across Cyprus since 1967, listed on the Cyprus Stock Exchange since 1996, and currently operates four quarries to extract the raw materials used for their production of clinker and cement.

Due to the company’s sustainability goals, it completed a €180 million upgrade of its plant in 2011 to make operations more efficient. This upgrade resulted in significant reductions to electricity and water consumption as well as CO2 emissions, and Vassiliko Cement Works continues to search for ways to reduce energy consumption and lessen its environment impact further.

As part of its sustainability ambitions, the company approached Powerstar with regard to our award winning, patented voltage optimisation technology. Due to the sensitive operational processes taking place, it was crucial that the Powerstar Cyprus team undertake the site evaluation, monitoring, and installation processes carefully, and at a time that would cause minimal downtime for the site.

After the successful results highlighted from the first installation of a Powerstar MAX voltage optimisation solution on the substation supplying the raw mill air compressors, a second Powerstar MAX was installed on the substation supplying the kiln preheater elevator.

Following initial data logging, the Powerstar team initially recommended the installation of an 850kVA Powerstar MAX, an electronic-dynamic voltage optimisation system. However, following the full in-depth site analysis the Powerstar team adjusted the system based on the newly discovered characteristics, which emphasised the importance of the full analysis process that Powerstar undertakes for each project prior to commissioning.

Following the installation, analysis has shown that, based on the index of kW per tonnes of clinker produced, the kiln preheater elevator is benefiting from an electricity consumption saving of 6%.

Both Powerstar installations are helping Vassiliko Cement Works to achieve its goal of further energy efficiencies, reducing the company’s impact on the environment as part of its focus on sustainability.
