Our latest voltage optimisation case study highlights the savings achieved by meat-free food production giant, Quorn Foods, once again demonstrating the benefits achievable with Powerstar technology in a multitude of sectors and environments.
Founded in 1985 with its headquarters in North Yorkshire, Quorn Foods operates 5 sites internationally and maintains a simple goal: to bring people delicious and exciting food that is good for them and good for the planet. Because of this goal, environmental sustainability is a priority for the company, and this is driven by its Supply Chain Sustainability Strategy, which prioritises improvements relating to Greenhouse Gas emissions, water use, waste, and responsible sourcing. Key to this strategy is ensuring production processes are as lean and efficient as possible.Quorn savings
Quorn Foods engaged with Powerstar due to its reputation for delivering savings and started exploring the benefits that installing voltage optimisation technology could provide to its site in Billingham, including the reduction of energy consumption and, in turn, carbon emissions, reducing the site’s impact on the environment. Furthermore, as a manufacturer with extended operating hours, it was essential that Quorn Foods’ business operations were not negatively disrupted during or after the installation.
Following a review of the site, Powerstar identified two supplies that would benefit from replacing the existing distribution transformers. Powerstar offered an optimised solution to lower electricity consumption, reduce CO2 emissions, and minimise energy costs through the Powerstar HV MAX amorphous core distribution transformer with integrated variable voltage optimisation technology.
Replacing the site’s existing, ageing transformers, which were experiencing high losses, with its Powerstar HV MAX solution increased the efficiency of the high voltage (HV) infrastructure whilst reducing the overvoltage supplied to the low voltage (LV) side to produce significant reductions in annual consumption, costs, and carbon emissions.
By replacing 3 of its ageing transformers, Powerstar is providing Quorn Foods’ Billingham site with average annual consumption savings of 7.7%.
