Voltage optimisation can be broken down into two main categories – Low Voltage (LV), for those that do not operate their own HV/LV distribution transformer, and High Voltage (HV) for those that do.
LV voltage optimisation is for sites that do not operate their own HV/LV distribution transformer and can come in two different types – fixed voltage optimisation and variable, or electronic-dynamic, voltage optimisation.
Fixed voltage optimisation solutions, such as Powerstar LITE, provide a set level reduction across a predefined tap range, providing benefits such as reduced electricity consumption and costs, and prolonging the lifespan of electrical equipment.
The optimised voltage will match the incoming voltage profile albeit reduced by a set amount, making this system ideal for sites with a stable yet high level of incoming voltage. Powerstar LITE systems are available from 100Amp for small commercial systems up to 3MVA systems available for larger commercial premises.
Variable voltage optimisation solutions, such as Powerstar MAX, take the incoming voltage and optimise it to a constant level providing the same benefits as fixed voltage optimisation solutions such as reduced electricity consumption and costs, and prolonging the lifespan of electrical equipment. Additionally, stabilised voltage output is achieved through the use of intelligent electronic controls that automatically adjust and maintain the voltage profile in real time.

Powerstar MAX systems are suitable for commercial premises and are available in sizes from 28kVA through to a maximum of 3MVA.
In contrast to LV voltage optimisation, this is for sites that operate their own HV/LV distribution transformers.
HV voltage optimisation solutions, such as Powerstar HV MAX, provide a combined solution to two common problems by combining a super low loss amorphous core HV/LV transformer with integrated variable voltage optimisation technology, allowing for 11,000V input and regulated 380V or user defined output.
Technology also exists that allows the user to alter the defined voltage online through the system’s remote monitoring capabilities. This platform enables users to manage and monitor the system in real time, from anywhere with a secure internet connection, to ensure maximum savings are being realised.
Depending on the age and type of the transformer that it replaces, an amorphous core transformer can provide between 1% to 5% savings simply because it is so much more efficient. In addition to savings on replacement of the transformer, the integrated voltage optimisation technology can be expected to provide a further 12% to 15% savings.
