Voltage Optimisation

The Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS), formerly the Department for Business Innovation and Skills (BIS) is a ministerial department of the UK Government, responsible for economic growth through investment in skills and education.

Challenge

BEIS identified that not only was the incoming voltage to their office & IT centres high but that the buildings were also suffering from power quality issues, namely harmonic distortions, transients and power spikes. Due to the success of previous installations into Government buildings Powerstar was contacted to determine if their voltage optimisation solution could be equally as effective for the BEIS office facilities.

Solution

After a site visit, voltage profile analysis and electrical load evaluation Powerstar recommended installing 7 voltage optimisation systems across the BEIS building estates. The Powerstar team worked with BEIS throughout the implementation process to ensure the correct engineering solution was adopted for each of the applications, and remained flexible so that installations could occur at a time to minimise disruption to business operation

Result

The energy consumption savings from the 7 installations achieved a minimum of 6.2% energy savings across all units. This significant achievement underscores the effectiveness of our approach in delivering tangible benefits to BEIS.
Furthermore, the installations led to substantial improvements in power quality. Powerstar’s interventions not only reduced voltage but also cleaned and conditioned the power supply, suppressing harmonics and transients while providing protection against various power issues.
As a direct result of these enhancements, BEIS realized a financial saving of £4,357 per year and an annual emission reduction of 29 tonnes of CO2. These outcomes demonstrate the holistic impact of our solutions, encompassing both economic savings and environmental benefits.
