John Leggott Sixth Form, Honeywell

John Leggott Sixth Form College in Scunthorpe was suffering from systematic power failures in its electrical equipment and paying high electricity bills. Honeywell Building Solutions was appointed to identify the source of the problem, then design, install and commission a voltage optimisation unit at the College to optimise its electricity consumption and enable the electrical devices to operate normally.


John Leggott College is an award-winning Sixth Form college located in Scunthorpe, which serves North Lincolnshire and the surrounding area. The College provides daytime courses for 16-19 year olds studying for GCSEs, BTEC and A levels in over 45 subjects. The College campus is home to several buildings, which are dedicated to particular groups of subjects. These include recently refurbished science laboratories, CAD-CAM design and technology suite, media studies areas, modern foreign language facilities, IT centre, library and catering facilities including a cyber café.


John Leggott College was experiencing premature failures on many electrical devices and IT equipment in particular. An independent report of the site revealed that a high voltage supply and harmonics were contributing to these power failures. Energy specialists from Honeywell Building Solutions conducted a subsequent site survey with voltage optimisation partners Powerstar. The survey revealed that because the College is located near to its electricity supplier’s distribution site, the voltage entering the site averaged at 248V. As nearly all UK equipment is EU rated and can operate on 220V, the oversupply was unnecessary and was increasing the College’s power bills. Over time it would eventually reduce the lifespan of its electrical equipment.


UK electricity supply to individual areas fluctuates significantly dependent on the position of the site. Electricity suppliers are required to provide a voltage level that is between 253V and 216V. Therefore, the supplier will distribute electricity at 253V and the voltage will decrease over distance. To overcome the geographical challenges, Honeywell and Powerstar identified the need for the installation of a Powerstar voltage optimisation system, which would make small reductions in voltage that are matched to the specific needs of the site. Honeywell installed the Powerstar unit to the College’s electrical supply during silent hours. Keeping within EU limits, the system effectively reduces the voltage to an optimum level whereby all the equipment operates correctly but consumes less power in the process.


Installation of the Powerstar system has meant a reduction in voltage level to the site, from an average of 248V down to 225V. In terms of energy consumption, this equates to an average saving of 30,000kWh electricity per month. Based on like-for-like usage, results show that this means monetary savings for the College in the region of £23,000 to £30,000 per annum and a reduction in carbon emissions of between 107 and 133 tonnes. Now that the voltage level has been specifically adapted to accommodate the exact needs of the College, the potential for the electrical equipment to fail has also been drastically reduced.
