INTRODUCTION

The Save group was established in 1987 when Save Cash and Carry in Pietermaritzburg, South Africa opened. From humble beginnings in Pietermaritzburg, the company grew to one of the largest Cash and Carry businesses in the Natal Midlands.

In 2009, the company expanded into smaller supermarket retail outlets with state of the art butcheries, bakeries, and kitchens, making their low prices available directly to consumers.

Save Hyper stores provide a wide range of goods to customers, including: electronics, household essentials, fresh fruit and veg, and chilled foods.

THE CHALLENGE

As a retailer with a diverse product range, Save Hyper operates a wide variety of electrical equipment from lighting and temperature controls to refrigeration.

Due to extended operating hours resulting in high electricity consumption, the stores experience high electricity costs.

The company’s ethos is heavily focused on the excellent value delivered to customers, so it was keen to reduce costs and improve sustainability to be able to pass the benefits on to its customers.

Therefore, Save Hyper Pietermaritzburg invited Powerstar South Africa to carry out a site evaluation and recommend an energy saving solution to reduce the store’s overall energy consumption and carbon footprint.

THE SOLUTION

A thorough site evaluation, load analysis and voltage monitoring revealed that the site had a very high and unstable voltage supply at 243.8V, resulting in unnecessarily high electricity consumption, costs and carbon emissions.

Powerstar South Africa recommended the installation of a Powerstar MAX, a variable voltage optimisation solution, to reduce and stabilise the incoming voltage.

SAVINGS AND BENEFITS

Analysis following installation of the Powerstar MAX demonstrated that the store is achieving an annual reduction in electricity consumption of 11.48%, higher than the guaranteed saving.

As a result, the electrical equipment at Save Hyper is now operating at a level closer to the optimum voltage for its design specifications, reducing wear and tear and extending the longevity of the equipment.
