Tees Active Ltd – Billingham Forum

INTRODUCTION

Billingham Forum is a large leisure complex in Billingham, UK, operated by Tees Active Ltd.

Billingham Forum was constructed in 1967 and was given an £18.5 million re-development in 2009. The forum offers a wide range of facilities including: an ice skating rink, a swimming pool, an Activ8 gym, fitness classes, squash courts, an indoor climbing centre, and a theatre.

Tees Active Ltd is a charitable leisure management organisation which was established as a non-profit-distributing company on 1st May 2004.

Working very closely with the Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council, the company specialises in the management of facilities and projects with the aim of raising levels of physical activity within the community. Per year, Tees Active welcomes almost 2 million visitors to its facilities and employs around 219 staff.

THE CHALLENGE

Tees Active Ltd is a non-profit-distributing company that was looking for ways to reduce energy consumption and costs in a number of its leisure facilities.

Billingham Forum is central to the surrounding community and operates 7 days a week to meet the demand. The Forum offers a wide range of activities, which requires an extensive variety of electrical equipment to operate at any one time.

Due to these characteristics, Powerstar identified Billingham Forum as a potential candidate for voltage optimisation technology which was confirmed after a series of thorough site surveys and in-depth evaluation of the sites voltage profile.

The incoming voltage at Billingham Forum was found to be stable but higher than required for the majority of on-site equipment, making voltage optimisation a perfect solution to correct the facility’s overvoltage and assist in reducing electricity consumption and offering the electrical equipment longevity by supplying an optimal voltage.

THE SOLUTION

Following a full site analysis of the Billingham Forum, the Powerstar team recommended the installation of a 750kVA Powerstar LITE system with a fixed 15V reduction.

Due to the nature of the leisure facility, a seamless installation was required which Powerstar fulfilled with minimal disruption to the facility’s daily operations and without negative impact to the experience of the visitors.

Powerstar provided a concept to completion service with a fully supported, turnkey solution which is reducing the facility’s annual electricity consumption by 189,591 kWh, which equates to annual consumption savings of 8.8%, exceeding the site’s guaranteed minimum saving.
