The Co-operative Group

INTRODUCTION

The Co-operative Group is the UK’s largest mutual business, owned by nearly eight million members. It is the UK’s fifth biggest food retailer operating across the country with almost 2,800 local, convenience and medium-sized stores, and is also one of Britain’s leading farming operations.

The Group operates 4,800 retail trading outlets, employs more than 95,000 people and has an annual turnover of more than £13bn.

Their sustainability strategy has always been a high priority and the group has a number of ongoing environmental projects and is a great ambassador of sustainability.

THE CHALLENGE

Since 2006 The Co-operative Group have reduced their CO2 by 35%. Keen to further continuously reduce their carbon footprint, the group aim to have reached a 50% reduction by 2020.

Reducing the Group’s carbon emissions across its large and diverse estate required an effective, custom designed technology that would deliver sustained energy savings.

THE SOLUTION

Each Co-operative site is different and so each Powerstar unit is made to measure in accordance with varying sites electrical characteristics.

Powerstar understood the varying needs with voltage optimisation in retail and was able to offer The Co-operative complete reassurance of guaranteed energy savings, compatibility, and a transparency of operations through dedicated project management and ongoing performance analysis.

THE BENEFITS

The three above examples so that the Co-operative have achieved significant savings in a number of the food groups stores. The Group are also set to experience increased life expectancy of electrical equipment across their many stores.

SAVINGS ANALYSIS

Site: South Shropshire Store
Savings of KWh achieved: 13.7%

The difference between the model and post install actual consumption is used to calculate the savings being made after Powerstar was installed. The large rise in consumption post Powerstar install is due to electric heating being used in the cold weather.
