Coffee Break with… Alastair Morris

During this month’s coffee break, we caught up with Alastair Morris, Powerstar’s new Chief Commercial Officer.

Here’s what Alastair had to say…

What was your first job role within the Energy Sector?

This one! So, I’m still on a steep learning curve to get to grips with the industry. My background is in technical sales within manufacturing and Powerstar now has an amazing opportunity to support the manufacturing sector, where power resilience is so critical.

Describe a typical day at Powerstar

They have all been very different, as there are so many different things to get my head round and I’m jumping from meeting to meeting on lots of different topics. But it’s clear I’m going to be dividing my time between supporting the commercial team as they implement some really important changes in the business and representing the company in new markets.

What do you enjoy the most about working in Energy?

Everyone uses energy. So, everyone can relate to what we offer. And the current urgent need to decarbonise our energy is creating a huge opportunity for us to help people solve some really complex problems and achieve net zero goals.

Are there any drawbacks to working in this sector?

It is a crowded and confusing marketplace, with a lot of different players, all trying to take a slice of the cake. Getting the message out there that we actually design and manufacture technology which makes a concrete difference can be challenging.

What’s your proudest achievement to date?

In 2019 the Sheffield Chamber of Commerce named me their businessperson of the year. I felt like a fraud, as it genuinely was a team effort that led to the company’s growth over the previous 3 years, but I took it as an acknowledgment that perhaps something had happened that wouldn’t have without me, and I’m very proud of the team that we put together.

Do you have any hobbies outside of work?

With 4 and 6 year old children there doesn’t feel to be much time for hobbies anymore, but I enjoy cooking and travelling, especially to Italy where I used to live. I’m also a big motorsport fan so the only time you can’t get hold of me is when there’s a Grand Prix on!

Advancements in technology often cause significant changes in many industries, such as energy. What recent technological advances have had the biggest impact on your personal life?

My robotic lawn mower is the best thing I have bought in years. And my lawn agrees.

If you had to give one piece of advice to people seeking jobs in energy, what would it be?

Look for where real value gets added to the energy industry via technology. Although there’s a lot of money to be made in trading energy, none of it would be possible without the physical electronics needed to generate, transmit, and store energy.

Why Powerstar?

I am a proud champion of the Sheffield region as a global leader in engineering and manufacturing. I also love the agility and flexibility that small businesses have. And I firmly believe that the technology urgently needed to achieve net zero will be the thing that drives recovery and growth over the next 10 years. Powerstar ticks all 3 boxes.

Describe Team Powerstar in 3 words

Honest, helpful, intelligent.

Alastair’s appointment as Chief Commercial Officer comes at an important and strategic period of rapid growth for Powerstar as the energy industry continues to grow and develop. We look forward to working with Alastair over the years to come.
