Coffee Break with Christopher Boyd
Once a month, we share a morning coffee break with one of the Powerstar team to find out more insight into their day-to-day role and why they enjoy working within the Energy sector.
This month, we’ve caught up with Christopher Boyd, General Manager at our Sheffield Premises. Here’s what he had to say…
What was your first job role within the Energy Sector?
Exposure to the energy sector was accomplished over 15 years ago, whilst manufacturing HMI products for use on both land and sea-based drilling platforms for oil and gas suppliers, then shortly after whilst producing equipment for nuclear energy plants.
Describe a typical day at Powerstar
Arrive early and after a fast-paced variety of meetings, shop floor discussions, manufacturing problems and solutions activities, its lunch time, then before you know it the same has happened again and in the blink of an eye its time to travel home; which then leads to the question, what happened to the day…?
What do you enjoy the most about working in Energy?
Energy is something that everyone needs; stability of supply in some circumstances is critical, as well as providing energy saving solutions in this day and age is paramount, so knowing that I’ve helped to provide both is what I enjoy, helping and protecting as many people as I can, in as many ways as possible.
Are there any drawbacks to working in this sector?
I’ve not encountered any yet!
What’s your proudest achievement to date?
Undertaking and completing a BA In Business and Management in my mid-40’s, whilst employed and then completing it in a record time of 6 months
Do you have any hobbies outside of work?
Enjoy movies especially ones from Marvel, craft beers and a good pub meal.
Advancements in technology often cause significant changes in many industries, such as energy. What recent technological advances have had the biggest impact on your personal life?
Gadgets… everyone likes a good gadget and ones which help you monitor spend like the SMART Meter will always create interest; home appliances, lights and heating linked to your mobile mean you have control and security at the touch of a button.
If you had to give one piece of advice to people seeking jobs in energy, what would it be?
Understand what you want to do within the sector, then go for it… follow your gut!
Why Powerstar?
From the first introduction to Powerstar I was hooked, being able to help businesses in so many different ways, with so many different solutions, it just felt right… that gut feeling is never wrong.
