Coffee Break with Demi-Leigh Searle

Date

Once a month, we share a morning coffee break with one of the Powerstar team to find out more insight into their day-to-day role and why they enjoy working within the Energy sector.

This month, we’ve caught up with Demi-Leigh Searle, our Events and Communications Manager. Here’s what she had to say…

What was your first job role within the Energy Sector?
Powerstar is my first job in the Energy Sector. I have been lucky enough throughout my career to have quite a varied background from security and surveillance, to haircare and the drinks industry, but energy has been by far the most challenging industry to get my head around.
Describe a typical day at Powerstar
As Events and Communications Manager, I have the pleasure of being involved in lots of different areas of the business. From organising our exhibitions and events to implementing our social media strategy and crafting the latest version of “Powerstar People” our employee newsletter or getting our new employee intranet set up.
What do you enjoy the most about working in Energy?
I like the fast-paced nature of the energy industry. We all need energy, and we all need to save energy. Whether it be for the cost of it (thinking about the current energy price crisis) or for the environment and the impacts on our planet.
Are there any drawbacks to working in this sector?
The technologies are complex and not having experience in the sector can sometimes feel daunting, I am however very lucky to be surrounded by qualified, experienced, and knowledgeable colleagues who are always happy to help.
What’s your proudest achievement to date?
I am very proud of the work and career development I have achieved during my short time at Powerstar. From the impact of our presence at events, the growth in our social media following, and of late the huge improvement we have made in our internal communication where we have made excellent strides in pushing the business to where it wants to be.
Do you have any hobbies outside of work?
My husband and I are currently halfway through a 70’s bungalow renovation, which we hope will soon become our dream home. I am also studying for my Chartered Institute of Marketing qualification and training for the Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge. There is still time to sponsor me, you can do so here.
Advancements in technology often cause significant changes in many industries, such as energy. What recent technological advances have had the biggest impact on your personal life?
For me, the advancements in digital communication have had a huge impact on my life. My parents live in Spain and my older brother in Thailand so being able to pick up the phone, talk, and play games like they are in the room makes a huge difference.
If you had to give one piece of advice to people seeking jobs in energy, what would it be?
Energy is such a hot topic at the moment and it will take a holistic approach with people of varied skill sets to overcome the challenges of the current energy landscape. So don’t be put off by technicality, and get stuck in!
Why Powerstar?
Powerstar is a welcoming, and supportive place to work, with ample opportunity to learn and develop, as the business grows. I feel lucky to have such amazing colleagues around me who I class as friends.
Describe Team Powerstar in 3 words
Nimble. Welcoming. Dedicated

Demi-Leigh is a valued member of the Powerstar team and we look forward to working with her for many years to come.
