Coffee Break with… Martin Cunnington

During this month’s coffee break, we caught up with Powerstar’s Head of Projects, Martin Cunnington, who has worked for Powerstar for many years.

Here’s what Martin had to say…

What was your first job role within the Energy Sector?

Prior to working at Powerstar I worked for over 20 years in the steel industry which was a major consumer of energy. With the rising cost of energy prices, energy efficiency became an important issue and a number of my projects were geared towards energy savings. In my particular area of steel, re-rolling were focussed on reducing gas consumption in the reheat furnaces.

Describe a typical day working with Powerstar

No two days are the same!

What do you enjoy the most about working in Energy?

Being able to provide clients with the opportunities to save energy and thus contribute to a greener planet that is less reliant on fossil fuels.

Are there any drawbacks to working in this sector?

You could say that the energy sector is probably not given the recognition that it deserves.

What’s your proudest achievement to date?

Raising twins (now teenagers)!

Do you have any hobbies outside of work?

Avid follower of Formula 1 and walking in the countryside as I live close to the peak district.

Advancements in technology often cause significant changes in many industries, such as energy. What recent technological advances have had the biggest impact on your personal life?

For me it must be the advances in IT – being able to have zoom sessions with relations rather than hold family gatherings during the recent lockdowns has kept everyone’s spirits up.

If you had to give one piece of advice to people seeking jobs in energy, what would it be?

That’s a tricky one, I think being aware of how energy is wasted and the related costs (financial and environmental) would provide the motivation for a person to seek a job who’s aim is to improve energy efficiency and reduce waste.
