Coffee Break with… Richard Kerr

Once a month, we’ll be sharing a morning coffee break with one of the Powerstar team to find out more insight into their day-to-day role and why they enjoy working within the Energy sector.

This month, we’ve caught up with our Head of Marketing, Richard Kerr, who has been with Powerstar for four and a half years.

What was your first job role within the Energy Sector?

My first role in the sector was here at Powerstar back in 2017 where I started as Marketing Executive. Previous to that I had worked in marketing in the automotive industry so was excited to be working within this new space.

Describe a typical day at Powerstar

As the Head of Marketing most of my responsibilities are in the sphere of marketing. However, with Powerstar being an SME, in a rapidly changing industry, there is a lot of collaboration with numerous people within the business including sales, technical, and R&D which means there is a huge amount of variety in the day-to-day.

What do you enjoy the most about working in Energy?

The energy sector is fast-paced and hugely topical both commercially and publicly, with all the talk of net-zero and carbon reduction. It is rewarding to work for a business that is making a difference environmentally and operationally for its customers.

Are there any drawbacks to working in this sector?

Legislation and funding from Government can be lacklustre and change rapidly to dramatic effect. This can have quick and negative impacts on strategy and projections.

What’s your proudest achievement to date?

Personally, raising my son who turns three this year, and all of the joys that come with parenting. Professionally, I am proud of the progress I have made in my career at Powerstar. Especially assisting in the direction of the marketing function and driving necessary changes within the business.

Do you have any hobbies outside of work?

When I get the time, in-between work and parenting, I mostly enjoy indulging in my video gaming hobby. In the past I have enjoyed creative writing which is something I would like to pick up again when time permits.

Advancements in technology often cause significant changes in many industries, such as energy. What recent technological advances have had the biggest impact on your personal life?

Mainly within my gaming hobby, I have seen advancements in video game technology which have caused the graphical fidelity and technical performance of games to rapidly progress. Also, media and communication advancements have made multi-player gaming easier (which came in handy during COVID lockdowns), and the potential for virtual reality gaming is very exciting.

If you had to give one piece of advice to people seeking jobs in energy, what would it be?

Dive in, absorb as much knowledge as possible from the leaders in the industry and their experiences. Focusing not just on the history of the energy landscape but look to understand current trends and where things may go in the future, including how the energy mix and legislation is changing.

Why Powerstar?

Powerstar is a leading-edge technology company, with a passion for research and development. With a 20-year history starting as a small consultancy business, to now being a specialist technology provider that has been enhanced by its passion for R&D, it’s an exciting company to be a part of and to think where it might be in another 20 years.
