Coffee Break with… Ricky Higgins

Once a month, we’ll be sharing a morning coffee break with one of the Powerstar team to find out more insight into their day-to-day role and why they enjoy working within the energy sector.

This month, we’ve caught up with our Business Development Manager, Ricky Higgins, who has been with Powerstar for nearly eight years.

What was your first job role within the Energy Sector?

Powerstar has been my first job in the energy sector, since completing my Mathematics degree at Nottingham Trent University in 2014. I joined Powerstar in the Proposals and Tendering team and have been lucky to develop my skills and support a number of roles since joining the business.

Describe a typical day at Powerstar

Working for a small business, means that every day brings a new challenge. In fact, the only constants in my day-to-day role are being very busy and drinking lots of tea.

What do you enjoy the most about working in Energy?

Sustainability is a topic in at the forefront of everyone’s thoughts. It’s great to work in an industry where it feels like you are positively contributing to the welfare of the planet, and securing a more sustainable future.

Are there any drawbacks to working in this sector?

Bespoke projects and solutions take time, and it can be challenging turning talk into action, but it is all part of the challenges that make the role fulfilling.

What’s your proudest achievement to date?

I am proud of my progression within the company over the years and especially proud of joining the Powerstar Management team where I enjoy feeling a part of shaping the future of the business.

Do you have any hobbies outside of work?

Sport is a huge passion outside of work for me, anything from football, golf, and darts. Participating or watching it is where you will find me in my spare time.

Advancements in technology often cause significant changes in many industries, such as energy. What recent technological advances have had the biggest impact on your personal life?

Advancements in technology in the hospitality sector (mostly driven my covid restrictions) have positively impacted my life. Remote ordering, digital payment etc have all advanced significantly in this sector for the convenience of the consumer.

If you had to give one piece of advice to people seeking jobs in energy, what would it be?

Get involved! Even if you’re not sure the role is 100% suited to you. You never know where it will take you unless you throw yourself into every opportunity offered to you.

Why Powerstar?

Powerstar has provided me with a great opportunity to get exposure to all areas of the business. We work with fantastic companies taking initial ideas, manufacturing a solution and delivering outstanding results.
