Coffee Break with…Sheeran Chen

Date

Once a month, we’ll be sharing a morning coffee break with one of the Powerstar team to find out more insight into their day-to-day role and why they enjoy working within the Energy sector.

This month, we’ve caught up with one of our Research and Development Team, Senior Software Engineer Sheeran Chen.

What was your first job role within the Energy Sector?

My first role was here at Powerstar as Software Engineer with the mission of developing product monitoring systems.

Describe a typical day at Powerstar

It’s usually hectic but fulfilling, as we’re not only handling new development work, but also have to maintain and develop previous projects.

As a Senior Software Engineer, sometimes I also need to support the service team, and assist our junior engineers and other colleagues to resolve technical difficulties.

What do you enjoy the most about working in Energy?

We facilitate recycling energy from renewable sources, instead of burning fossil fuel.  It makes you feel you are contributing to the reduction of unnecessary CO2 emissions for our planet – and at the industrial level, indeed we do!

Are there any drawbacks to working in this sector?

Can’t name one at the moment.

What’s your proudest achievement to date?

Besides helping to deliver some project systems in time and training new engineers, I developed some modules that didn’t exist in our products but will be useful, (for example world maps to display our product distribution and critical calls monitoring to service team), and provided new solutions to resolve some technical difficulties.

Do you have any hobbies outside of work?

I like concerts, traveling and hiking. I traveled over 15 countries in the past 5 years, and I hiked from Inverness to John o’ Groats in 2 weeks (around 150 miles) in Sep 2021.

Advancements in technology often cause significant changes in many industries, such as energy. What recent technological advances have had the biggest impact on your personal life?

Working in this industry has helped me realise how difficult it is to generate our energy, and this has helped me re-evaluate my lifestyle, so as to reduce energy waste so far as I can.

If you had to give one piece of advice to people seeking jobs in energy, what would it be?

Many people are already half on board towards limiting global climate change – just join us and adopt a better energy-economic lifestyle. Every little effort counts!

Why Powerstar?

Powerstar offers a very friendly working environment, and a platform to face different challenges every day. Even if our R&D people don’t have immediate answers to questions people raise, we always work through it until we do

Describe Team Powerstar in 3 words

Sheeran is valuable member of the team at Powerstar and we look forward to working with him for many years to come.
