Coffee Break with Steve Jarvis

Once a month, we share a morning coffee break with one of the Powerstar team to find out more insight into their day-to-day role and why they enjoy working within the Energy sector.

This month, we’ve caught up with Steve Jarvis, one of our Digital Marketers. Here’s what he had to say…

What was your first job role within the Energy Sector?

Powerstar is my first job in energy. Previously I’ve worked in similar roles in several different sectors such as corporate events, web development, and for one of the UK’s biggest manufacturers of bikes.

Describe a typical day at Powerstar

It might be a cliché to say but every day really is different with lots to focus on. I’ve not been here long so there’s lots of learning still. Every day always starts with coffee though.

What do you enjoy the most about working in Energy?

There’s always something new to learn. I enjoy learning new things. Energy is vital to almost everything and helping to improve how green the energy sector is something important to everyone.

Are there any drawbacks to working in this sector?

The technical aspects can be daunting to learn, especially as development in this sector is very fast-paced. Thankfully I’m surrounded by a lot of very smart and helpful colleagues. While everyone is aware of their own carbon footprint it feels like there are a lot of businesses where it’s not even a concern yet.

What’s your proudest achievement to date?

In my personal life, it’s raising my daughter to be the person she’s become. In work life, I’m proud of how much I’ve learned and developed enabling me to be good at my job.

Do you have any hobbies outside of work?

I enjoy watching sports, Football, Formula 1, and Ice Hockey. I like to travel with my family and take photos and I enjoy playing games of both Tabletop/ Board and video varieties. I’m always happy to talk about Dungeons and Dragons or sci-fi too.

Advancements in technology often cause significant changes in many industries, such as energy. What recent technological advances have had the biggest impact on your personal life?

The continual improvement in ways to communicate has had probably the biggest impact. It’s never been easier to stay in touch with family and friends who don’t live close by. It’s had a huge impact on playing games online with friends too.

If you had to give one piece of advice to people seeking jobs in energy, what would it be?

Go for it. Don’t be daunted by the technical aspects as everyone has something to learn.  Never stop learning.

Why Powerstar?

Powerstar has huge growth potential in an industry that is a vital part of life. I’m excited about where things will go in the next few years, both within the Energy sector and here at Powerstar. It’s a great environment to work in full of really friendly welcoming people too.
