In Front of the Meter
In Front of the Meter (FtM) refers to electricity infrastructure and generation that are directly connected to the distribution network. This includes a broad range of grid-scale generation and storage, as well as infrastructure such as sub-stations and distribution transformers. This is in contrast to Behind the Meter (BtM) assets that sit behind an electricity meter, such as on-site generation, storage or infrastructure.
It is the responsibility of National Grid and your DNO (Distribution Network Operator) to maintain, upgrade, and expand FtM assets as required. As an end user you have no control over how they operate however, it is important to bear in mind that as more FtM renewable generation, such as solar and wind farms, are added to your distribution network, the risk of disruption conversely increases. Therefore, your approach to resilience should be a comprehensive plan that protects everything BtM, protecting your productivity, and operations in the case of a grid failure.
