Modelling & Simulation

Powerstar has extensive and unrivalled capability to model and simulate multiple Behind the Meter (BtM) power flows.

These systems can be anything from a simple solar panel plus battery storage system to a highly complex, artificial intelligence driven, smart microgrid.

Commercial and Industrial organisations that are considering a change to their on-site power systems need to be sure that the system will work, that it will deliver the returns that they assume, and that they can achieve the necessary permissions needed to proceed. Creating a full model of the system and running real-time simulations of all possible scenarios allows this to be done upfront before committing to large investments.

How modelling and simulation can help you

There are many changes that you might be making to your site’s power systems which would benefit from performing technical due diligence prior to installation.

The addition to your site of renewable generation, battery energy storage, electric vehicle chargers or even just loads from new electrical equipment can impact the rest of your site’s electricity demands. Without checking the whole system under multiple scenarios of grid supply, weather conditions, failure modes and connectivity you risk installing a system that does not work as intended.

These additional pieces of electrical infrastructure can be easy to implement and will work under “normal”, average conditions but will typically only be stress tested once they are in use, and it is common to discover too late that they are unable to perform as expected.

A digital twin of your site’s power system can be created in order to run real-time simulations of all types of power scenarios.

A common and significant issue for this type of project is the ability to connect the new infrastructure to the grid. All generation and many large loads will need the approval of your Distribution Network Operator (DNO) before being connected.

There are several reasons that this cannot be taken for granted. The maximum capacity of local substations and cables can prevent connection, or require significant upgrade fees to be paid. A simulation of the system can prove what the maximum fault currents will be and what capacity will be required, thus overcoming potential grid constraints.

To achieve this, Powerstar uses a grid emulator which can replicate the grid supply in real-time and generate a simulated, digital version of your physical site with the new technology.
