On the 30th January, the market leading UK based smart energy solution provider, Powerstar, was recognised at the Rushlight Awards 2019/20 in Westminster, London during its 13th year. Attended by organisations that are leading the way in clean technology innovation and sustainable solution deployment, investors, advisers, media, trade associations and government departments, the celebration followed the very successful Rushlight Show where over 400 delegates participated in the UK Energy Breakfast & Seminar; the Cleantech Conference incorporating the Cleantech Innovation Showcase.
Powerstar won the Rushlight Power Generation and Transmission Award for the high-quality design and innovative features of its smart distribution transformer, Powerstar SO-LO, following the delivery of marked benefits to an engineering client after the replacement of a relatively young but inefficient distribution transformer.
This award was developed to recognise “the most significant engineering development or innovation that has improved the efficiency of energy transmission from fuel source to consumer”.
Powerstar’s super low loss smart distribution transformer, SO-LO, was selected for the award for its outstanding performance and efficiencies, which due to the molecular structure of its amorphous core, has lower losses at a rate up to 75% less than ageing or traditional CRGO transformers.
Alongside delivering greater efficiencies, its smart capabilities cater to the rise of Industry 4.0 by providing remote monitoring delivering valuable performance and operational information of the asset, streamlining energy management reporting and maintenance activities.
The project the submission was based on involved a world leader in producing engineered solutions to protect critical applications in demanding environments. They were suffering from large losses in their high voltage (HV) infrastructure despite having a relatively young transformer, resulting in wasted electricity, higher than necessary electricity costs, and regular maintenance activities being required.
Analysis of the existing transformer was performed after its removal from site and revealed that by installing the Powerstar SO-LO the client achieved a saving of approximately 2% of its annual kWh (135,097kWh per year) through a reduction in transformer losses of 44% resulting in a payback of the installation of under 3 years.
Having been shortlisted for the Electrical Review Excellence Power Product of the Year Award in 2019, the Rushlight award adds to Powerstar’s growing list of accreditations accolades in the sector.
