Balancing Resilience with Net Zero
The race to achieve net zero, and mitigate the most damaging effects of rising global temperatures, means that companies are facing enormous changes in how they operate.
The Energy Trilemma is defined by the World Energy Council as the need to find a balance between security, affordability and sustainability in how we access and use energy. While the current energy price crisis has seen significant attention placed on affordability, the other two aspects of the trilemma remain vitally important.
Finding solutions that are able to contribute positively to each aspect of the trilemma, rather than bolstering some at the expense of others, is challenging and requires transformational solutions that are able to reshape the way individuals, organisations and countries use energy.
The World Energy Council’s Energy Trilemma Summit and 2022 Executive Assembly will be hosted in Scotland for the first time this year. The event will take place between the 12th and 13th October in Aberdeen.
Leaders and energy specialists from almost 100 countries will attend, with the event focused on finding ‘transformational solutions in turbulent times’. This will specifically focus on solutions that are able to address all three aspects of the energy trilemma. The event forms part of the countdown toward the World Energy Council’s 100th anniversary in 2024.
Angela Wilkinson, Secretary General and CEO of the World Energy Council, said: “The world is in crisis, and this is a significant moment for energy. Our world energy community is convening in person, in Aberdeen, to forge a new energy narrative which pulls new and diverse energy interests together.”
Dr Alex Mardapittas, Chief Executive Officer at Powerstar, said: “It is vital that both as individual organisations and as a global energy community, that the current energy price crisis doesn’t draw attention away from the other aspects of the trilemma.
“Finding solutions that can not only reduce energy costs but also bolster sustainability and protect consumers and businesses alike from the risk of power disruption is of paramount importance. This event ensures that the collective focus of the world’s leading energy leadership and expertise is focused on finding, developing and accelerating the solutions that can best deliver every aspect of the energy trilemma.”
The race to achieve net zero, and mitigate the most damaging effects of rising global temperatures, means that companies are facing enormous changes in how they operate.
A growing number of businesses and organisations across a range of sectors are coming to the realisation that procurement alone is not enough to deliver on their energy goals.
Carbon offsetting can be a useful tool to deliver net zero, but there a potential pitfalls to be aware of
Every type of business has a responsibility to improve daily operations to reduce carbon emissions. The Government is also putting more pressure on certain industries to be more aware of their carbon footprint and to become more environmentally friendly.
