Potters Resorts Five Lakes is a major hospitality destination, offering not just guest rooms but all-inclusive leisure facilities — including an indoor spa, sports facilities, and conference spaces — making it a substantial energy user.

Like many large hotels, the complex faces high energy demands due to its continuous operations, extensive lighting, HVAC systems, and specialised areas. Recognising the opportunity to reduce energy costs while supporting sustainability goals, the hotel partnered with Powerstar to explore advanced energy management solutions.

Challenge

Operating an all-inclusive resort complex with varied high‑load zones (including guest rooms, indoor sports park, a 15m swimming pool, and back-of-house facilities) presents significant energy‑efficiency challenges. These areas, in particular, require substantial energy for pumps, heating, ventilation, and lighting systems, while guest rooms and operational zones further contribute to overall energy demand. With long operating hours, even modest inefficiencies can lead to considerable energy costs and carbon emissions, making a strategic energy‑management solution essential.

Solution

In 2024, Powerstar installed two LV MAX Voltage Optimisation systems at the complex. These units were integrated with a 1.5MVA transformer, capable of handling the hotel’s high-demand areas while optimising voltage delivery to electrical systems. By stabilising and optimising voltage levels, the LV MAX system aimed to reduce energy wastage, ensuring that all electrical equipment operated efficiently without compromising performance. The system also helps protect sensitive equipment in the spa and hotel, extending its lifespan by reducing electrical and thermal stress.

Conclusion

The deployment of voltage optimisation units across Five Lakes Resort has resulted in significant energy, cost, and carbon savings. This project demonstrates how strategic energy management solutions can effectively reduce operational costs while contributing to sustainability goals.

By focusing on high-demand areas and stabilising voltage supply across the site, the resort has achieved meaningful savings while maintaining the high standards of guest comfort and operational reliability that define the Potters Resorts experience. This project highlights Powerstar’s expertise in delivering tailored energy solutions that combine financial, operational, and environmental benefits for complex, high-energy-use sites.

Result

Since installation, the impact has been substantial. Using Powerstar’s online monitoring portal, the resort has saved approximately 338,524kWh of energy, representing a 6.85% reduction in annual electricity consumption. These savings correspond to roughly 12,800kg of CO₂ avoided, demonstrating that the solution not only reduces costs but also supports the resort’s sustainability agenda. Beyond the reductions in energy and carbon, the two Powerstar units also contribute to more stable and reliable operations, reducing wear on critical equipment and delivering ongoing operational and maintenance benefits.
